About this product
Waterproof aluminium-faced butyl rubber sealing tape for roof flashing, leak repairs, joints and general maintenance, supplied as a 50mm x 5m roll.
Butyl Rubber Tape is a flexible self-adhesive sealing tape designed for waterproof repairs around roofs, flashing, windows, pipes, joints and other areas where water ingress needs to be sealed.
Seal cracks, joints and leaking areas
The soft butyl sealing layer conforms to the surface as the tape is pressed into place, helping it follow joints, edges and uneven areas more closely than a rigid repair strip. It is particularly useful for maintenance jobs where a waterproof barrier needs to be applied without mixing or spreading a separate sealant.
Aluminium-faced protection
The silver aluminium foil face forms the exposed outer surface after installation, while the butyl layer underneath provides the sealing bond. This combination makes the tape well suited to roofing, flashing and outdoor repair work where the finished repair needs a protective external surface.
Cut, peel and press into place
The roll format makes it easy to cut the required length for anything from a short crack to a longer joint. Remove the release liner, position the tape carefully and press it firmly over the repair area to create close contact between the butyl layer and the surface.
How does butyl sealing tape work?
Butyl tape uses a soft sealing compound beneath the outer facing. When the tape is pressed firmly onto the prepared surface, the butyl layer conforms around small surface irregularities and across the joint or crack being covered.
Unlike a liquid sealant, the sealing material is already formed into a consistent strip. This makes it useful for repairs where you want to cover a longer seam or damaged area in one continuous application.
Where is 50mm butyl tape most useful?
The 50mm width gives enough coverage to bridge many common cracks, seams and joints while remaining manageable around smaller repair areas. It is useful for roof flashing, sheet joints, gutters, window surrounds, pipe repairs and other sealing jobs where the tape can overlap sound material on both sides of the problem area.
For the best result, choose a width that gives the butyl adhesive sufficient clean surface to bond to around the damaged section rather than covering only the crack itself.

How to use
Clean the repair area thoroughly and remove dust, dirt, grease, water and loose material. Cut the required length of tape, peel away the release liner and position the butyl side over the joint, crack or damaged area. Press firmly across the complete surface of the tape, paying particular attention to edges and changes in profile. Where possible, allow the tape to extend onto sound material around the repair rather than covering only the damaged line.
Storage
Store the roll in a cool, dry place away from direct sunlight and excessive heat. Keep the release liner in place until the tape is ready to be applied and protect the exposed edges from dust and contamination during storage.
Frequently asked questions
What is butyl rubber tape used for?
It is used for waterproof sealing and repair work including roof flashing, leaking joints, gutters, windows, pipes, sheet materials and general building maintenance.
Is this butyl tape waterproof?
Yes. It is designed as a waterproof sealing tape for covering cracks, joints and areas where protection against water ingress is required.
What size is the roll?
The tape is 50mm wide and supplied on a 5 metre roll.
Does the tape need a separate adhesive?
No. The butyl layer is self-adhesive, so the tape can be applied after removing the protective release liner.
Can I use it for roof repairs?
Yes. Roof flashing, sheet joints and localised roof leak repairs are common applications for this type of waterproof butyl sealing tape.
Can it be applied to uneven surfaces?
The butyl layer is flexible and conformable, which helps it follow small irregularities, joints and changes in surface profile when pressed firmly into place.
What is the silver outer layer?
The exposed face is aluminium foil. It covers the butyl sealing layer and provides the visible outer surface of the finished repair.
How should I prepare the surface before applying it?
The surface should be as clean, dry and sound as possible. Remove dust, grease, loose material and moisture before positioning the tape, then press it firmly across the full repair area.
